Feb. 4-The Saint Mary's men's tennis team lost a heart-breaking match to WCC opponent, San Francisco, today at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex by a final score of 4-3. Despite some nagging injuries the Gaels played well in both singles and doubles. After splitting the singles matches 3-3 with the Dons, the Gaels were swept in three great doubles matches. With the loss, the Gaels drop their season record to 1-3 while the Dons improve to 3-3.

In singles play, freshman Martin Marechal continued his extended his unbeaten singles record to 4-0 with a victory over the Don?s Mason Fuller at #4 singles, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4. The first set defeat marked the first set lost all season for Marechal. Fellow freshman, Andre Sion, also played well by posting a victory over Romain Van Rillas at #5 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Claiming the last singles victory for Saint Mary?s was Rafael Lopez as he defeated Jorgen Arnesen 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, at #2 singles. Suffering a heart-breaking loss was 2002 All-WCC Honorable selection, Thomas Burgemiester, at the number one singles position to his nationally-ranked opponent Joachim Lien 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Also losing a close match was J.J. Whitlinger at #6 singles, as he endured a marathon in his matchup with Axel Elvik before falling 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. The only straight set loss for the Gaels came at #3 singles, when the injured Romain Lachens was defeated by Pablo Piresde Almeida 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles action, the Gaels played valiantly in all three matches despite being swept. Teammates Andre Sion and Romain Lachens played extremely tough at #3 doubles against the Don?s tandem of Pires deAlmendia/Anesen before being defeated 9-8 (5). Thomas Burgemiester and J.J.Whitlinger also played strong before falling to Lippert/Elvik by a close score of 9-7 at #2 singles. At the #1 doubles position, Rafael Lopez and Martin Marechal played well before falling to Lien/Fuller 8-5.
