Abbas Faridnia scored twice in the final 15 minutes as Gonzaga University defeated Valaparaiso University 2-0 Sunday to win the Oregon State Beaver Classic. Fardinia's first goal came on a penlaty kick at 81:28, his second such game-winning goal in two weeks. His penalty kick last week at OSU in overtime gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over California State University-Sacramento. The senior from Spokane gave the Bulldogs (4-3-0) an insurance goal eight minutes later, taking goalkeeper Mike McCarthy's pass down the right sideline and dribbling in for the goal past Crusaders (4-4-0) goalkeeper Marc Clifton at 89:06. It was McCarthy's first career assist. More importantly for McCarthy, it was is third shutout of the season and his career. Gonzaga won for the third time in its last four outings, rebounding from a disappointing 1-0 setback Friday to California State University-Northridge. The wide-open affair saw 37 shots between the teams, although only nine found their way on goal. Gonzaga held a slim 19-18 shots advatnage with McCarthy making 3 saves and Clifton 4. Although all four teams won a match in the tournament - Oregon State defeated CS-Northridge 3-2 on Sunday - Gonzaga was declared the tournament champion based on goal differential. OSU lost to Valparasio 2-1 on Friday.
