SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University pitcher Anthony Rea signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball following the conclusion of last week's professional draft.

Rea, a native of Palo Alto, Calif., is the school record-holder in career saves with 25 and led the Broncos this season with a 2.84 ERA in his 24 appearances. A 5'-11" right-hander, Rea started 11 games and registered a 7-6 record on the season. He was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week last monthafter captuing a 12-inning 6-5 win over Stanford and a complete game 2-1 masterpiece at Pepperdine.

A member of the league's all-academic team as an economics major with a 3.424 cumulative grade point average, Rea registered an impressive 1.33 ERA during the month of May and struck out 15 batters while walking only two (0.07 per inning).
