Apr 30-San Jose State senior Markum King had a grand slam and six RBIs as San Jose State University won, 8-3, over Saint Mary’s in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Blethen Field.

With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, King took a 3-1 pitch deep just left of dead center field to clear the bases and increase his RBI to a team-best six RBI on the day. In the third inning, King hit a single with the bases loaded to drive in two runs.

The six RBIs mark the most for a Spartan this season and is three shy of the school’s single-game record set by Steve Ochoa in 1986.

The Spartans (22-23) won both meetings with the Gaels (17-26-1) this season with an 8-3 win earlier in Moraga, Calif.

San Jose State opened the scoring as Nick Guerra drove in Nate Corrick from second. Corrick led off the inning with a walk and then advanced on freshman second baseman David Pierson’s sacrifice bunt.

The Gaels answered back to open the second, when right fielder Adam Bellows hit a two-out double. Bellows scored after a fielding error by the Spartan third baseman allowed Mike Harris to reach base safely.

San Jose State junior right fielder Jon Heuerman scored to break the 1-1 tie in the second. He opened the inning with a double and scored on a single by Corrick.

The Gaels tied it up again in the third, but King’s two RBIs in the Spartan half of the inning gave San Jose State the lead, which they held the rest of the game.

Saint Mary’s was able add a run in the fifth on Bryan Byrne’s solo homerun to come within a run, but once again King gave the Spartans some cushion.

Freshman Brandon Dewing earned the win for the Spartans after pitching two innings and allowing one run one hit and striking out three. He improves to 3-1 on the season. The Spartans used five pitchers who combined for three runs on seven hits and 12 strikeouts.

Kevin Trochez took the loss for the Gaels. He pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks. He drops to 1-5 on the year. Saint Mary’s used four pitchers who combined for eight runs on nine hits, walked four batters and two strikeouts.

Byrne was the lone Gael with a multiple-hit game. He also drove in two runs.
