Apr. 19 -- For the second time this season Gonzaga scored 10 runs in an inning as the Bulldogs (21-17, 9-7 WCC) used a 10-run third inning Friday afternoon to defeat Loyola Marymount 11-2 in the opening game of a West Coast Conference series at August/A.R.T. Stadium. The Lions dropped to 16-23, 9-6 in the WCC. LMU struck first in the contest scoring two runs in the top half of the third inning against Gonzaga starter Ed Clelland (5-3). Billy Lockin connected for an RBI double down the left field line to score Joe Silva. Lockin would come around to score on a single through the left side by Kris Zacuto. LMU would threaten several more times but the Bulldogs defense was able to turn four double plays and strand 10 LMU runners on base. The Bulldogs big inning started simple with a walk by Eric Rodland and single by Grant Zurmely. Consecutive wild pitches by Lions starter Joshua Muecke (2-4) allowed Rodland and Zurmely to move up to second and third. Nate Gold grounded out to score Rodland and cut the LMU lead to 2-1. Kevin Richardson was hit by a pitch, placing runners on first and third before Munhall tied the contest at 2-2 with a single past a diving Jonathan Oller. Kemp Quackenbush singled to load the bases for Sam Hess who delivered a two-run single to right field. Jeff Culpepper followed with an RBI single to right center before Garth Blumberg cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right. Muecke would be lifted for relief pitcher Kyle Huddy after Blumberg's eighth home run of the season. Following a second single by Zurmely, Gold crushed a ball over the left field fence for his 28th home run of the season to cap off the Zags 10-run outburst. Gonzaga previously scored 10 runs in the ninth inning of a 17-2 win over Santa Clara on March 25. Munhall drove home Gonzaga's final run of the game in the seventh inning as he finished 3-for-5 on the afternoon. Zurmely also had three hits to lead the Bulldogs. Brad Welker pitched the final three innings in relief to pick up his first save of the season. Lockin, Tommy Perez, Jonathan Higashi, Joshua Whitesell and Silva all finished with two hits for Loyola Marymount. The two teams will resume the series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
