Gonzaga collected two victories over non-conference opponents before suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of San Francisco at home. The Bulldogs faced Washington State for the third time this season on Tuesday and pummeled Cougar pitching for a 10-1 win. Gonzaga took two-of-three from their in-state rivals this season. Senior Eric Rodland broke Gonzagas career record for hits with a single and a double against the Cougars. Five different Bulldogs hit homeruns in Gonzagas five games last week, the highest number of Zags to homer in one week so far this season...Gonzaga will travel to Loyola Marymount for a three-game series that begins on Thursday. The Bulldogs swept the Lions in three games at August/A.R.T. Stadium last season. Following the LMU Series, the Zags will return home for a season high eight-game homestand.
Loyola Marymount Lions (21-16/8-7 WCC) - Head Coach: Frank Cruz
The Lions began the week with a 22-6 loss at #2 ranked Cal State Fullerton, then traveled to Pepperdine where they were swept in three games by the Waves. Junior Josh Whitesell hit two homeruns for LMU to bring his team-leading total to nine. Despite the sweep, the Lions remain atop the West Division and continue to lead the conference in team batting, hitting at a .317 clip. Four of the top-ten WCC leaders in batting average are Lions. Whitesell is fifth in the conference with a .360 average, while freshman James Cooper is seventh with a .351 average. Jonathan Oller and Jonathan Higashi stand at eight and ninth in the conference, hitting .341 and .336, respectively...LMU will host USC on Tuesday before welcoming Gonzaga to Page Stadium for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.
Pepperdine Waves (22-15/12-3 WCC) - Head Coach: Frank Sanchez
Pepperdine improved their conference record to 12-3 after sweeping West Division leader Loyola Marymount at Eddy D. Field Stadium in three games over the weekend. After a 5-1 loss at UC Irvine on Tuesday, the Waves rebounded to defeat the Lions 4-2 in the series opener behind a complete game performance from senior Greg Ramirez. The four-hit masterpiece was Ramirez second consecutive complete game and his third in four starts. Ramirez leads the team in complete games with four on the season. Junior Chris Kelly collected six hits in the series sweep and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. Kelly is also hitting a team-high .333...The Waves return to action when they travel to UC Riverside on Tuesday before heading to the Bay Area to meet San Francisco for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.
Portland Pilots (8-26-1/4-10-1 WCC) - Head Coach: Chris Sperry
Portland dropped a Tuesday game at Oregon State before traveling to Saint Marys, where they would lose two and tie the series finale after 11 innings. Stephen Ball threw well once again for the Pilots, as the freshman surrendered only two earned runs through six innings before the bullpen gave way in Fridays 13-4 loss to the Gaels. In Sundays double header, the Pilots dropped the first game then took a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth before Saint Marys tied the contest and sent it into extra innings. The game was ruled a tie after two scoreless innings, but the two teams will conclude the contest at the end of the season should it be necessary. Should the tie stand, it would be the first time since 1988 that Portland has finished a season with a tie...The Pilots will host the streaking Santa Clara Broncos for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.
Saint Marys Gaels (15-19-1/6-8-1 WCC) - Head Coach: John Baptista
Saint Marys improved their conference mark to 6-8-1 after winning two-of-three against visiting Portland over the weekend. Senior Eric Bowden tallied his third complete game of the season in Fridays 13-4 victory over the Pilots. Bowden struck out eight hitters and surrendered four runs during the outing. Junior Nick Conte continued to be hot at the plate, collecting six hits in the series with Portland and raising his average to a team-leading .372 after batting only .237 last season. Conte has started 34 games behind the plate and is second in the conference in batting while leading the WCC in two-out RBI with 19...The Gaels will travel to San Diego for a three-game series that begins on Thursday.
San Diego Toreros (19-23/9-9 WCC) - Head Coach: Rich Hill
The Toreros beat Southern California 4-3 on the road on Tuesday before traveling to Santa Clara and dropping two-of-three to the Broncos. San Diego saw their conference record fall to 9-9 and dropped into a tie for second place in the West Division with San Francisco. Senior Tony Perez came on in relief in the win over USC to strand a base runner at third and collect his seventh save of the season. Junior Joey Prast hit two doubles in Fridays 16-5 win over Santa Clara, bringing his season total to a conference-high 19. The WCC record for doubles in a season is 31, set by LMUs Miah Bradbury in 1989 and equaled by Santa Claras Joey Gomes last season...The Toreros will travel to meet crosstown rival San Diego State on Tuesday before returning home to face Saint Marys for a three-game weekend series.
San Francisco Dons (16-23/9-9 WCC) - Head Coach: Nino Giarratano
The Dons began the week with a 3-2 loss to Pacific but rebounded to earn a three-game sweep of Gonzaga in Spokane. Junior Ryan Hanson went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI in Saturdays 7-5 win over the Bulldogs. The catcher knocked in another four runs in Sundays 8-3 win, driving in a total of eight runs on five hits for the three game series. Senior Nick Tarbat drew his 31st walk of the season on Saturday, giving him 70 career free passes and moving him into the top-ten on San Franciscos all-time list. Tony Hurtado (1997-2000) is the Dons all-time career leader in walks with 116...San Francisco returns to action when they host the Coast Division leading Pepperdine Waves for a three-game series this weekend. The Dons were swept in three games by the Waves in Malibu last season.
Santa Clara Broncos (18-21/10-5 WCC) - Head Coach: Mark OBrien
Santa Clara improved their conference mark to 10-5 by taking two-of-three from visiting San Diego at Buck Shaw Stadium over the weekend. After Bronco pitching was battered in a 17-8 loss to Stanford on Tuesday and a 16-5 loss to San Diego in the series opener, SCU rebounded to sweep the Sunday doubleheader. Senior Joe Diefenderfer threw his second complete game shutout of the season to lead the Broncos to a 6-0 victory in Sundays first game. Senior Scott Dierks continued to terrorize opposing pitching as he added two homeruns to bring his conference-leading total to 14. As a team, the Broncos increased their conference-leading homerun total to 40. Santa Clara also ranks second in the conference in slugging percentage with a .427 mark...The Broncos will try to gain ground on Coast Division leading Pepperdine when they visit Portland for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.
