No. 5 Argonauts Set to Host Top-Ranked BYU-Hawaii

March 26, 2007

PENSACOLA, Fla. - After starting the season 2-5, the West Florida women's tennis team (12-4) has put together a 10-match winning streak. That streak will be put to the test this Tuesday against top-ranked BYU-Hawaii (18-0). The match will begin at 2 p.m. at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.

The Argonauts are coming off a 4-0 record during their Spring Break trip to Southern California last week. During the trip, West Florida defeated three ranked teams: #36 Hawaii-Hilo (9-0), #21 Hawaii Pacific (6-2) and #19 UC-San Diego (7-2). In their 10-match winning streak, West Florida has only dropped six games while posting seven shutouts.

Four Argonaut singles players have won at least 10 matches this season, led by Tammy Kevey's (Auckland, New Zealand) 14-4 record. The sixth-ranked doubles team of Kevey and Mandy Septoe (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) are 14-3, while the 14th ranked team of Paola Arevalo (Cali, Colombia) and Suzana Cavalcante (Sao Paulo, Brazil) have posted a 10-3 record.

Defending national champion BYU-Hawaii (18-0) has posted seven consecutive shutouts while only losing six games this season. The Seasiders have won 45 consecutive matches since the start of the 2005 season. BYU-Hawaii features five ranked singles players, headlined by third-ranked Jing Jing Lu and fifth-ranked Dori Magas.

Last season, BYU-Hawaii defeated West Florida twice. BYU-Hawaii won the regular season meeting, 7-2, in Pensacola. Despite the loss, Cavalcante defeated Liu, who was the top-ranked singles player in the nation. Cavalcante and Arevalo also knocked off BYU-Hawaii's top-ranked doubles team to account for the Argonauts only two wins. BYU-Hawaii also topped West Florida, 5-1, in the national semifinals in Kansas City. The Seasiders have won the previous 13 matches against West Florida.

The top-ranked West Florida men's team will also be in action against 14th ranked BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday. West Florida defeated BYU-Hawaii, 6-3, last season in Pensacola. The Argonauts hold a 9-4 advantage in the all-time series.

A free cookout will be offered for all in attendance during Tuesday's matches.
