PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida posted their eighth shutout of the season today at the hands of Delta State, 5-0. The tenth ranked Argos improve to 8-2-2 and a perfect 5-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida is the only undefeated team in the GSC.
"We are trying to peak at the right time and the GSC Tournament is not far away," stated UWF Head Coach Joe Bartlinski. "I think this team is capable big things at the end of the year."
The busier West Florida had a monstrous advantage in shots, 26-1, and 12-1 in shots-on-goal. A majority of this game was played in DSU's end of the field, due to UWF's constant offensive attack.
Jodi Galucci (Stuart, Fla. / South Fork HS) gave UWF a commanding 4-0 lead with just over 16 minutes left to play and scored her third goal of the season. Galucci received the pass on the run in the box from Kelly Anne St. Claire (Casteries, St. Lucia / Lassen College). Marcelo Franco (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tacked on the fifth goal of the game for UWF, her second, with just over a minute left to play on St. Claire's third assist. Franco has a team high eight goals.
Mauricia Nicholson (Mount Pleasant, Tobago / Bishop) gave UWF a 3-0 lead at the 27:14 mark of the second half. Patricia Toledo's (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Cloud Country CC) pass found a streaking Nicholson in the box for an easy goal, her fourth of the season.
Franco scored at the 21:14 mark of the first half. St. Claire assisted the goal with a perfect lead pass to Franco who scored on the break away to put UWF up 2-0. The Argos led by that score at the break.
"We did a great job of getting behind their defense," said Bartlinski.
Linsday Nemanich (Houston / Langham Creek HS) scored UWF's first goal on a penalty kick at the 30:22 mark. The goal was Nemanich's second of the season (both on penalty kicks). She snuck her shot by DSU keeper Samantha Selby in the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
Delta State is still winless versus West Florida, with the Argos winning all three career matches. The Argonauts are ranked second in the south region. The top four teams from the south qualify for the NCAA Division II Regionals. They play at Thomas (Ga.) on Tuesday night at 4 pm.
