PENSACOLA, Fla. - Following a dazzling weekend, during which he saved two penalty kicks, assisted with one goal and led his team to their first shutout of the 2007 season, West Florida goalkeeper Juan Garcia earned his first Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.
Against Tampa University last Friday night, Garcia stopped all four shots that came his way in 84 minutes, as the Argonauts were triumphant, 4-0, over the Spartans. With his team ahead by the large margin, the junior goalkeeper was removed from the match to get red-shirt freshman David McNally some experience, thus did not receive his first clean sheet of the season.
Garcia's Sunday performance was even more impressive and rare. The Bogota, Colombia native willed his team to a 2-1 victory at Saint Leo Saving two penalty kicks in the match. Garcia stopped the first just four minutes into the second half and was challenged again with two minutes remaining, earning his fourth career penalty kick save as the Argos edged the Lions, 2-1. He also saved the follow up attempts on both shots.
Garcia and the Argonauts are back in action this Friday night at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. following the West Florida women's match also against Rollins.
