MADISON, Wisc. Three teams helped themselves the hard way on Friday (Jan. 3) night on the road as St. Cloud State, Minnesota State and Michigan Tech all earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association victories away from home. SCSU upended host Minnesota, 4-3, to move into a third place tie with the Golden Gophers, the visiting Mavericks edged Wisconsin, 3-2 in overtime, to move into a fifth place tie, and the MTU Huskies blanked host Alaska Anchorage, 4-0, to earn their first league win of the season and also move up one place in the standings.
In the league's marquee series at Grand Forks, meanwhile, No. 1-ranked and host North Dakota (18-1-2) and No. 3-ranked and league-leading Colorado College (16-2-3) played to a 4-4 overtime tie Friday a result that left the Tigers' three-point lead over the Fighting Sioux intact heading into tonight's (Jan. 4) contest. And in a non-conference matchup out east, Minnesota Duluth fell 5-2 to Rensselaer.
Heading into Saturday's schedule, the WCHA standings continue to tighten. CC leads the MacNaughton Cup race with 21 points, followed by North Dakota in second with 18, Minnesota and St. Cloud State tied for third with 14, and Denver, Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State all tied for fifth place with 13 points each.
