Hanson, Ptak, and Lady Cats Wrap-up Historic Wilson ITA Regionals

Oct. 24, 2004

Cullowhee, N.C. - Fresh off the school's first victory in the Wilson ITA Regionals, the tandem of Trish Hanson and Katherine Ptak could not continue the magic, falling to the Wake Forest team of Karin Coetzee and Ashlee Davis, 8-1 on Saturday to wrap-up the five-day event for Western in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Friday afternoon, Hanson, pulling double-duty in the tournament competing in both the singles and double competition, fell to Danielle Schwartz of Wake Forest 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round of the women's open singles competition. Hanson was Western's second-consecutive automatic qualifier, joining Kristin Munn who was the first to accomplish the feat in 2003. Schwartz went on to fall to eighth-seeded Jenny Zika of Duke in the round of 32.

On Thursday, the freshman/junior doubles team of Hanson and Ptak defeated the tandem of Alana Carere and Isabel Rzezniczek, 8-6 to advance in the women's open doubles where they met up with Coetzee and Davis. The victory was Western Carolina's first-ever at the ITA Regional event.

The women's tennis team will conclude the fall portion of their 2004-05 season next weekend, October 29-31 as they travel to the University of South Carolina (USC) Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
