Cullowhee, N.C. -
On the strength of goals in each of her past two games, WCU sophomore forward Shannon Fowkes was named today as the Southern Conference Co-Player of the Week by the league office.
Fowkes accounted for a pair of goals in this past week's matches, both conference victories against Appalachian State and The Citadel. She totaled six shots overall in 79 minutes of work, her two goals coming on the two shots that were on target. She led the team in goals, points and shot percentage for the week. She also tops the team in goals and is tied for the points lead for the entire season.
Her selection marks the second time she has been recognized in her career by the league. During her freshman campaign, she was named Player of the Week for the week of October 10. Fowkes is the first repeat winner of the award in the WCU women's soccer history.
This is also the second time this year that a Catamount has been given Player of the Week honors. Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Williams won the award the week of September 18 after taking home Defensive MVP honors at the East Tennessee State Tournament.
The league also named Appalachian State forward Casey Cleary as the Co-Player of the Week. Cleary found the back of the net four times on the week, beginning with the game-winning goal against South Carolina State on Wednesday. She then netted the SoCon's first hat trick of the season in a 4-3 loss to Furman.
Fowkes and the Catamounts will travel down to Charleston, S.C. on Thursday to take on the Cougars of College of Charleson at 7:00 p.m. They will then return home the following Sunday, October 14, against Chattnooga. Kick off for the game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. For more information about all Western Carolina athletics, log on to catamountsports.com
