Sept. 10, 2007
Our trip out west was a whirlwind of driving, flying, napping, hydrating, and some soccer occasionally.
The trip began with 5:00 am departure to the Atlanta airport where we flew to Denver. From Denver we drove through the Rockies to Laramie, Wyoming. The scenery was completely different from that of our mountains; there were very few trees and even less color to be found.
While walking through downtown Laramie, we seemed to stick out; maybe it was the group of 25 females, wearing matching purple warm-ups, while carrying cameras and water. The altitude didn't affect us too terribly; thanks to the endless amounts of water we drank throughout the trip.
During the game against Wyoming we dominated the first half. We knocked the ball around them with ease and had ample opportunities to score but didn't capitalize on our chances. We seemed to take them off guard and they were not expecting us to come out like that. The score was 0-0 going into the second half; Wyoming came out stronger than we expected. The second half never seemed to settle down and neither team held onto the ball well. Wyoming finished an opportunity which made the final score 1-0.
Everyone was very disappointed from the results of the game because we were the better team and yet, didn't win; that is the most frustrating way to lose. That game taught us the importance of putting away a team early and often so they won't steal a win away from you.
On our way out of Wyoming we traveled through the Rockies and stopped at Estes National Park. While enjoying some time off the field, we walked through the quaint downtown area and hiked around a mountain lake. This was a good day for everyone to just relax, forget about Wyoming, and refocus on our next opponent, Northern Colorado.
Northern Colorado has a great facility and we were all excited to play; we were on edge and ready for a win. During this game we did an excellent job of displaying our style of possession and creativity on offense. We knocked the ball around nicely and produced several opportunities for ourselves. All four goals were great team goals and it felt good to finally celebrate scoring and winning; the final score was 4-0.
It was a relief to know that we are capable of beating teams and playing well; we just needed to get over our rocky start. Overall, everyone had a great time out west but we couldn't wait to get back home to the Whee.
