The University of North Carolina women's basketball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 100-44 defeat of Western Carolina Tuesday evening at Carmichael Auditorium.
Sophomore forward Tiffany Hamm led the Catamounts (2-1) with 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior center Laura Echols added eight points and nine boards.
The Tar Heels were paced by guards Coretta Brown and Nikki Teasley with 15 points each. North Carolina (3-1) shot a season-best 52.0 percent from the field as a total of six Tar Heels hit double figures in the game.
Western had chances to keep the game close in the first half, despite 19 first-half turnovers, as the Tar Heels tallied 15 fouls in the first 20 minutes. However, the Catamounts only hit 9-of-20 free throws, while UNC drained 7-of-12 3-pointers to secure a 59-26 advantage at halftime.
The Catamounts will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 24) for a Noon tipoff at Campbell. Western will play its first home game on Thursday (Nov. 29) when Wake Forest visits the Ramsey Activity Center.
