Cullowhee, N.C. -
On Friday afternoon, Western Carolina senior Matt Cook was named the Southern Conference's Men's Golfer of the Month for September after helping to guide the Catamounts to back-to-back runner-up finishes.
The monthly award is the fifth for Cook, who has been the SoCon's top men's golfer in each of the past three Septembers. He was also the league's golfer of the year in 2005-06.
Last month, Cook led WCU to consecutive second-place finishes at the Raines Development Group and the Xavier Invitational. The Murphy, N.C., native posted a seasonal best third-place finish at the Raines Development Group event at Country Club of South Carolina - which will again host this season's SoCon Men's Golf Championship next spring - carding an even par 216. He most recently shot an eight-under par, 208, at the Xavier Invitational against a very talented field including several teams ranked inside the nation's top 50 to finish tied for 10th.
In three events during September, Cook, who remains atop WCU's career scoring charts, averaged 71.44 strokes per round while shooting a low of 68 twice.
Cook and the WCU men's golf team is back in action on October 15-16 at the Southbridge Invitational in Savannah, Ga.
