Spartanburg, S.C. -
Western Carolina senior golfer Tim Eckberg has been named the TIAA/CREF SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of October 1, the league announced today.
Eckberg (Walnut, Ill./Illinois Valley JC/Bureau Valley HS) carded a one-over par 73 on the final round, but his two-day total of 142 stood up as the winning score to take individual medalist honors at the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate, played at the Sea Trail Resort's Rees Jones Course Sept. 27-28.
Eckberg, who fired a career-best 69 on day one to rank third on the WCU single-round list, becomes just the third Catamount on record to win medalist honors and the first since Jerry Stafford won a rain-shortened, one-round event at VMI in 1996. Eckberg's two-round total of 142 ties for the second-lowest, two-day score on the WCU all-time list. His play helped Western shoot 292 as a team on the second day to move up two spots and finish sixth (599) in the 20-team field.
Eckberg carries a cumulative GPA of 3.394 in sport management. He was named to the Southern Conference TIAA-CREF All-Academic Team last spring as well as the SoCon Honor Roll.
The WCU men's golf team will return to action Oct. 13-14 at the Sonic/UTC Fall Classic.
