Cullowhee, N.C. - Highlighted by return trips to three of their previous tournament sites from a year ago, the Western Carolina men's golf team and head coach Gorham Bradley today released their 2007-08 schedule. The team will travel outside of the state of North Carolina for all but one of their tournaments, with the lone match in-state being the one it will host at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Cashiers the first week of November.
2007-08 Western Carolina Men's Golf Schedule
"This year's tournament schedule makes huge statement concerning the development of our golf program over the past few years," said head coach, and WCU alumnus Gorham Bradley. "Our goal was to develop a strong enough schedule to allow us the opportunity to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. I think we have achieved that goal. The strength of our schedule - which includes events in which we will see Clemson, LSU, Louisville, Charlotte and Virginia Tech - will provide us excellent experience in getting prepared for the Southern Conference Championship."
The Catamounts will go back to three tournaments that they played in the 2006-07 season, including the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion Sept. 18-19. The event will again be held at the Country Club of South Carolina, the site of the 2008 Southern Conference Championships. They will be looking to improve on their impressive seventh place team showing at the Francis Marion tournament, and to gain some valuable experience on the course for the SoCon Championship in the spring.
The fall portion of the schedule also includes trips to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the season-opening Scenic City Invitational hosted by Chattanooga Sept. 10-11; a voyage up north for the Xavier Invitational in Loveland, Ohio at the first of October; and the Southbridge Intercollegiate in Savannah, Georgia, hosted by SoCon-foe Georgia Southern Oct. 15-16. The opening portion of the schedule will conclude with the WCU Invitational, Nov. 5-6 in Cashiers.
To kick off the spring, the Catamounts will get a chance to visit the coast of South Carolina when they pay a visit to the College of Charleston. The match will be played at historic and world-renowned Kiawah Island Golf Course for the Cuthbert Cup.
Gearing up for the Southern Conference Championships, the men will make the program's first-ever trip to the west coast to play in the Calloway Golf Invitational in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif., hosted by the Univ. of California-San Diego, on March 11-12. They then will head back to the friendly confines of SoCon play two weeks later at the Furman Invitational (March 28-30), where they will look to improve on their 20th-place team finish from a year ago.
The week before the SoCon Championships will not be taken lightly as the team will battle some of the top teams in the country at the UK Bluegrass Classic (April 12-14) in Lexington, Ky., held at the Kentucky's University Club.
The annual SoCon Championships are scheduled for April 19-21 at the Country Club of South Carolina. Last year, the Catamounts took sixth place overall in the conference, with senior Matt Cook leading the way with a fourth place finish, and junior Andres Cuenca right behind in 11th, both earning a spot on the All-Southern Conference squad.
