WCU Men's Golf Signs Jamestown's Matt Dowdy

April 14, 2004

Cullowhee, N.C. - Catamount head men's golf coach Johnny Wike announced today that Matt Dowdy (Jamestown, N.C.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Western Carolina University.

Dowdy, who is currently competing in his senior year at Southwest Guilford High School and ranked 21st in the North Carolina Junior Golf Association rankings, is a three-time All-Piedmont Triad selection. As a junior, he was named Conference Player of the Year and was medalist at his regional championship. As a sophomore, he won the North Carolina 3A State Championship, while sharing medalist honors at his regional championship.

"Matt has all the tools to be a great player in the Southern Conference," Wike said. "He is one of the best recruits that we have had the opportunity to sign. I feel like Matt and (current WCU freshman) Tripp Morrow were the two best high school players to come out of the state over the past two years."

The Catamount men's golf team leaves for Johnson City, Tenn., this weekend to participate in the 2004 Southern Conference Championships, which will be played at The Ridges. The first round is set for Sunday (April 18) with rounds two and three be played on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
