Tripp Morrow Is First WCU Student-Athlete to be Named SoCon Men's Golfer of the Week

April 7, 2005

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Tripp Morrow has been named Southern Conference Golfer of the Week after leading his Catamounts to a first place finish at the 2005 Draper Valley Invitational. It is the first time a WCU men's golfer has ever received the honor.

With Western's victory over the nine-team field, it marked the first time in school history the Catamounts have won a regulation tournament it did not host.

Morrow birdied his last four holes to force a playoff for individual medalist honors. While he lost in the playoff, it marked the fifth time in 10 WCU events this season a Catamount has finished regulation as either leader or co-leader. (Morrow won WCU/Shoot-Out at Wild Wing, Keith Tyburski lost in a playoff at the WCU-Sapphire Valley Intercollegiate, Matt Cook won the Tusculum Invitational and Cook lost in a playoff at Winthrop-Waterford Invitational.)

Morrow finished his 36 holes at Draper Valley with a score of 142 (73-69), which ties for sixth on the WCU all-time list and is his second-lowest, two-day total for his career. Morrow currently has a season stroke average of 74.87 to rank 15th in the SoCon. Freshman teammate Matt Cook is currently fourth in the SoCon scoring list with his season average of 72.5.

The only other time a Catamount men's golfer has been honored by the league for his performance during the week was when Tim Eckberg was named the TIAA-CREF SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance on the course and in the classroom. TIAA/CREF SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of October 1, the league announced today. Eckberg carded a two-day total of 142 to take individual medalist honors at the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate in September of 2003. He additionally had a 3.394 cumulative grade point average in sport management.

Western Carolina will conclude its regular season at the 2005 Southern Conference Championships, held April 15-17 at River Run Golf and Country Club in Davidson, N.C.
