WCU Men's Golf Starts Hot, Finishes Day 1 in 6th; Matt Cook Tied for Individual Lead

Oct. 30, 2006

Charleston, S.C. - After shooting a tournament-best 288 and leading in the first round Monday morning, the Western Carolina men's golf team could not keep the momentum going and carded a second round 300 to fall to sixth at the Charleston Southern Fall Invitational, played at Crowfield Plantation Country Club. While the team faltered, Matt Cook, the nation's top-rated player in the nation, is tied for the lead as he and Jacksonville's Duncan Stewart each shot rounds of 68-70 for a score of 138, three strokes better than their nearest competitor.

Cook led the field with 11 birdies on the day as did his three-under scoring on the par 3's, while his three-under on the par 4's was tied for the best in the field. With his six-under for 36 holes Monday, Cook is now 28 under par over his last six rounds.

Freshman Patrick Lamb and senior Tripp Morrow helped Western record its 288 in the first round with Lamb firing a 71 in morning session and Morrow shooting 74. However, in the afternoon, Lamb shot 82 and Morrow shot 85.

Sophomore Andres Cuenca, who is ranked 35th in the nation, stands in 18th after turning in rounds of 75-73 (148) with freshman Cody Walker shooting 78-75 (153), tying Lamb for 31st with a two-round score of 153.

South Carolina, who matched WCU's first round score of 288 in second round, stands in first in the 10-team field, shooting 290 in round one and having a two-round score of 578. Jacksonville is in second (581), followed by host Charleston Southern (583), Florida Atlantic (585), Stetson (587) and Western (588).

The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday afternoon. Western will then return to Cullowhee to prepare for its annual WCU Intercollegiate, played this year on Nov. 4-5 at Hendersonville's Etowah Valley Country Club.
