Greenville, N.C. - Western Carolina fired the fifth-lowest round of the day and moved up one spot to finish sixth at the 2005 East Carolina Pirate Fall Intercollegiate, played at the par 72 Bradford Creek Golf Course.
The Catamounts were led in the third and final round by Tripp Morrow's 74, which moved the junior from 40th to a tie for 29th. Morrow finished with a 54-hole total of 226. Overall, Western was led by sophomore Matt Cook. The Murphy native turned in rounds of 73-73-76 for a total of 222 and a tie for 17th. Senior Blake Wray and sophomore Matt Dowdy each carded totals of 227 to tie for 32nd, while sophomore Bill Forcier tied for 53rd with a three-round score of 235.
Host team East Carolina won the event, shooting 291 today and 865 for the tournament. The Pirates were followed by Campbell (874), Charleston Southern (878), High Point (891), Presbyterian (894) and Western (900).
In addition to taking home the team title, ECU had the individual medalist as well thanks to Robin Smith's rounds of 71-71-69 (211), while teammate and 36-hole leader Chris Ault, who also fired a 211 (70-70-71).
Western Carolina will return to action Nov. 7-8 in its last event of the fall season. The Cats will host its own WCU Intercollegiate at Trillium Golf Links in Cashiers.
