Rain Forces Final Round Cancellation; WCU Men's Golf Wins Team and Individual Honors at Liberty

Oct. 17, 2006

Amherst, Va. - Heavy rain in the Lynchburg, Va., area Tuesday forced the cancellation of the final round of the Liberty/Frank Landrey Invitational. With that, 36-hole leaders Western Carolina men's team and Catamount junior Matt Cook were declared medalists of the event. Western, who tied a school record with a two-round total of 571 (288-283), won the 10-team field by 14 strokes. Cook, who carded a school-record 132 (65-67), won by five strokes over teammate and runner-up Andres Cuenca.

Gorham Bradley. "We tried to play today with one player getting in just five holes, but the rain was just too much."

Cook missed the WCU single-round record by just one stroke, with teammate Tripp Morrow firing a 64 during his freshman season. Over his last four rounds, Cook is 22 under par, thanks to 14 birdies over the two rounds Monday. Cuenca, who had a pair of eagles on Monday and had a tournament-best six-under par scoring on the par 4's, turned in rounds of 71 and 66 as his 36-hole total of 137 ranks fifth on the WCU all-time list. Rounding out Western's scoring was Cody Walker (76-74=150; 18th-t), Tripp Morrow (77-76=153; 31st-t) and Patrick Lamb (76-77=153; 31st-t).

Charleston Southern finished second at 585, holding off third-place Longwood (588), while Towson and Radford are tied for fourth at 590.

Western Carolina will return to action Oct. 30-31 in Charleston, S.C. at the Charleston Southern Invitational, played at Crowfield Plantation Country Club.
