Savannah, Ga. - Western Carolina senior Matt Cook tied his own 54-hole school record by wrapping up a three-round total of 206 with a four-under, 68, on Tuesday to post a runner-up finish and lead the Catamounts to fourth-place at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate at the 6,922-yard Southbridge Golf Club.
It was the second time in his four-year career that Cook had shot 206, tying his score from last season's Charleston Southern Invitational. The Murphy, N.C., native now holds six of the top 10, three-round scores in school history. Cook, who recorded his 17th career top five finish, concluded the tournament tied for the most birdies with 17 while also ranking tied for first in par 5 scoring (4.42, -7).
Additionally, as a team, Western Carolina shot 860 to mark the third-best, 54-hole tournament in the history of the program. It is the second-straight week the Catamounts have posted a top three score as they set the school-record with an 843 a week ago at the Xavier Invitational.
The host Georgia Southern Eagles won the tournament team title, rallying from down seven strokes to finish tied with Winthrop in regulation at 856 before claiming the championship in a playoff. Augusta State, which is a perennial top 15 team in the nation, finished third just one stroke off the lead at 857, with WCU three strokes in arrears in fourth. Rounding out the top five finishing teams was Eastern Michigan (862) in fifth, two strokes back.
First round leader, Winthrop's Kelly Manders, used a late chip in for birdie and an eagle to claim the individual medalist honors with a two-day score of 202, four strokes ahead of Cook. Georgia Southern's Logan Blondell, who was tied with Cook after Monday's opening two rounds, finished third three strokes back at 209. Brad Larente (211) of Eastern Michigan and Carter Newman (212) of Augusta State rounded out the top five individual finishers.
Behind Cook, freshman Caleb Marsh continued his strong play with his third career top 10 finish after shooting a three-round score of two-under, 214, to place in a three-way tie for eighth. The Strawberry Plains, Tenn., native led the tournament in par 3 scoring, shooting a combined four-under on the shortest par holes.
Junior Dustin Furnari rallied 17 positions with a third round 70 on Tuesday to finish tied for 29th (220), with classmate Andres Cuenca improving 14 spots to place in a seven-way tie for 32nd, one stroke in arrears at 221. Cuenca tied for the most par scores in the tournament with 42 overall while Furnari was tied for second in par 5 scoring (-6, 4.50) behind Cook. Rounding out Western's scorers was sophomore Ricky Stout who shot two-over 74 in the final round to finish tied for 52nd.
On November 4-6, it will be Western Carolina's turn to play tournament host. The WCU Intercollegiate, presented by Macon Bank, is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4 through Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Cashiers, N.C. Practices rounds at the course will be held on that Sunday, with the 36-hole tournament opening Monday morning.
