Savannah, Ga. - On the strength of the lowest round of the first day, Western Carolina senior Matt Cook stands tied for second, one-stroke off the lead with 18 holes to play at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate from the 6,922-yard Southbridge Golf Club. The Catamounts shot rounds of even par, 288, and one-over, 289, to stand fifth place entering Tuesday's final round.
Cook, who was tied for 12th after the first 18 holes, shot rounds of 71 and 67 on Monday, with the latter marking both his lowest round of the season and the lowest round among the 81 men's golfers at the tournament. Freshman Caleb Marsh, who opened the day with a three-under, 69, is also in the hunt for WCU just three strokes in arrears in a two-way tie for fifth-place.
Winthrop posted consecutive rounds of seven-under, 281, and eight-under, 280, to lead the tournament with a 15-under, 561. The host Georgia Southern is second with a two-round score of 570, followed by East Carolina (573), August State (574) and Western (577) in fifth.
Kelly Manders of Winthrop holds the individual lead after shooting seven-under, 137, one-stroke ahead of both Cook and Georgia Southern's Logan Blondell. Winthrop's Cipriano Ayala (139) is two strokes off the lead in fourth, with Marsh and GSU's Ryan LeFevre tied for fifth at 140.
Behind Cook and Marsh, juniors Andres Cuenca and Dustin Furnari are tied for 46th after each shooting 150, with sophomore Ricky Stout tied for 53rd with a two-round total of 152, which included a first-round score of 75 which was counted on WCU's opening 18.
After shooting an opening round 81, WCU red-shirt sophomore Cody Walker, who was playing as an individual, withdrew from tournament play in the second round.
Stout is scheduled to be the first Catamount on the course for Tuesday's final round, teeing off at 8:45 am, with Cook going off at approximately 9:21 am.
