Amherst, Va. -
After setting school records in its last outing, winning the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate, the Western Carolina men's golf team had one record fall today, while tying another en route to a 14-stroke lead after 36 holes at Liberty's 10-team Frank Landrey Invitational Monday. Junior Matt Cook, who carded a then WCU record 134 at Elon's event, fired rounds of 65 and 67 Monday to establish a new standard of 132. As a team, the Catamounts turned in rounds of 288 and 283 to tie its mark of 571, which was also accomplished at Elon's event last month.
Cook, who leads by five strokes over teammate Andres Cuenca, missed the WCU single-round record by just one stroke. Over his last four rounds, Cook is 22 under par, thanks to 14 birdies over the two rounds Monday. Cuenca, who had a pair of eagles on the day and a tournament-best six-under par scoring on the par 4's, turned in rounds of 71 and 66 as his 36-hole total of 137 ranks fifth on the WCU all-time list. Rounding out Western's scoring was Cody Walker (76-74=150; 18th-t), Tripp Morrow (77-76=153; 31st-t) and Patrick Lamb (76-77=153; 31st-t).
Charleston Southern stands at 585, holding off third-place Longwood (588), while Towson and Radford are tied for fourth at 590.
The final 18 holes, scheduled for Tuesday, will give the field a different look. After playing in "perfect" conditions Monday, according to head coach Gorham Bradley, the forecast in the Lynchburg, Va., area Tuesday is calling for a high of just 56 degrees with a 90 percent chance of rain.
