WCU Golf Shatters Record; Stand Four Shots Out With 18 Holes Left at JMU

Oct. 10, 2005

Harrisonburg, Va. - Despite tying for fifth place in the 12-team James Madison Invitational, played at the par 71 Lakeview Golf Course, Western Carolina is only four strokes out of the lead through 36 holes, while setting two school records Monday afternoon.

In the morning session, Western had three players shoot under par, including a pair of 68's from Blake Wray and Matt Cook, to shoot a school-record 280 for 18 holes. The previous standard was 281, set last month at the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate. Wray, who shot 70, and sophomore Matt Dowdy, who carded a career-low 69, led WCU in the afternoon session, shooting 284 in round two to record the fourth-lowest single-round in school history. Through 36 holes, Western's 564 marks the first time in school history the Cats have been below 570 through 36 and is seven strokes better than its previous best (571 set at Chattanooga in 2003-04).

Wray, a senior from Ithaca, N.Y., leads Western with his 138, which is the third-best, 36-hole score in school history. He is in sixth place and just three strokes behind the leader, James Madison's Jay Lindell. Wray also owns the school record by firing a 136 through 36 holes at Chattanooga in 2003-04. Cook, a winner in each of his first two events this season, carded a one-over 72 in round two to record a 140 through 36 and tie for 11. Bill Forcier turned in rounds fo 70-73 to shoot 143 (24th-tied), followed by Tripp Morrow (74-73=147; 44th-tied) and Dowdy (79-69=148; 48th-tied).

Liberty leads the team scoring with a 560. Host JMU and George Mason are one stoke off the pace (561), Drexel stands three strokes out (563) and Western is tied with Belmont Abbey for fifth (564).

The 54-hole event will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
