WCU Men's Golf Charges to 9th Place Finish

Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - The Western Carolina men's golf team carded a 290 on the third day, Western's eighth-best 18-hole total all-time, to move up to a ninth-place finish in the 20-team field at the Winthrop/Mission Inn Collegiate Classic Sunday afternoon. The Catamounts had a 54-hole score of 900, which is the eighth-best three-round score in WCU history.

Catamount junior Chase Kress led the way on day three, firing an even par 71, and posted a three-day score of 221 to tie for 21st place. Kress' 221 ties his career low and ties for 15th on the WCU all-time 54-hole score list. Fellow junior Blake Wray turned in a 74 on day three and tied for 30th with his total of 224. Freshman Matt Dowdy overcame a first-round 81 to post scores of 74-75 for a three-day total of 230 to tie for 54th. Keith Tyburski and Tripp Morrow rounded out the Catamounts' scoring with a 233 and 235, respectively. After two tough days, Morrow broke through with a one-under par 70 on day three.

Host team Winthrop University claim top honors with a three-round score of 869, followed by Charleston Southern, Elon, Illinois State and Chattanooga. Chattanooga's Bryce Ledford was the individual medalist with a 54-hole score of 207. His 207 was six under par and five shots better than second place.

Western Carolina will return to action Oct. 17-19 at Chattanooga's Sonic Fall Classic, played at Signal Mountain, Tenn.
