Loveland, Ohio - Shooting the second-lowest team round of the final day of competition, Western Carolina rallied from its fifth-place tie after Monday's opening two rounds to finish tied for second Tuesday at the Xavier Invitational. Western shot 275 collectively as a team over the final 18 holes at the par 72, 6,921-yard Oasis Golf Club to advance three positions to post its second-consecutive runner-up finish this season.

Western's 54-hole score of 843 marks a school record among three-round tournaments, two-strokes better than the previous mark of 845 set at the JMU Invitational back in the 2005-06 season.

The Catamounts were led individually by senior Matt Cook and freshman Caleb Marsh as the duo tied each other for 10th-place overall with 54-hole scores of 208. In addition to being Marsh's career-low collegiate tournament, the three-round score for both also ties for the second-lowest in school history.

First-round leader, Marquette, held off the hard-charging Catamounts to claim the team title by a mere two strokes, 841-to-843. WCU finished tied with Campbell, which was fourth following Monday's rounds, with Saint Mary's (Calif.) one stroke back to place fourth and the host Musketeers and Eastern Kentucky finishing tied for fifth with combined scores of 850, nine strokes off the lead.

Western Kentucky's Brent Long, who was one stroke back in third place after the opening pair of rounds played Monday, claimed the individual medalist honors with a three-round, 13-under 203 (68-67-68). Colin Clemente of Akron finished second, one stroke back at 204 (69-69-66) with Marshall's Christian Brand, EKU's Phillip Hendrickson and Saint Mary's Joshua Kelley all two strokes in arrears tied for third at 205.

Behind both Cook and Marsh, junior Andres Cuenca advanced eight positions on the final day with a two-under 70 to finish tied for 28th. Sophomore Ricky Stout posted his career-low, 54-hole score by shooting 216 including an even-par final round on Tuesday to place tied for 32nd with teammate Dustin Furnari who shot his WCU career-low round of 68 to advance 28 places in the final order.

WCU's Marsh led the tournament in birdies, finishing holes one-under a total of 20 times which helped him rank tied for second on par 4 scoring at seven-under (3.77). Cook was tied for fifth in par 4 scoring by shooting four-under (3.87), while Stout was tied for sixth in both par 3 scoring by carding even par (3.00) on the shortest holes and in birdies with 15. Collectively, the Catamounts led the tournament scoring with 74 birdies which helped them rank second in par 5 scoring (35-under, 4.42) and third in par 4 scoring (five-over, 4.03).

Playing as an individual for Western, sophomore Benjy Davey saved his best for last, shooting 77 on Tuesday to finish with a three-day total of 239.

Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks, Oct. 15-16, at the Southbridge Invitational, hosted by Southern Conference member Georgia Southern, at the Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah, Ga.
