Loveland, Ohio - Tied for sixth place after the opening round, the Western Carolina men's golf team moved into a two-way tie for fifth-place with a two-round score of 568 with 18 holes to play at the Xavier Invitational at the par 72, 6,921-yard Oasis Golf Club. Freshman Caleb Marsh tied his career-low round of 69 over the first 18 holes and finished with a one-under 71 in round two to lead the Catamounts with a 36-hole score of 139, tied for ninth overall.
Marquette carded a tournament record-low, second-round 266 to hold a two-stroke lead over Saint Mary's (Calif.), 561-to-563 entering the final round. Eastern Kentucky (564) is three strokes of the lead in third, followed by Campbell (565) with Western Carolina and Akron tied after both squads fired an eight-under 568.
Phillip Hendrickson of Eastern Kentucky and Joshua Kelley of Saint Mary's lead the 104-golfer field, each shooting a 10-under 134 on Monday. Western Kentucky's Brent Long is one stroke in arrears at 135, with Christian Brand of Marshall in fourth-place at 136.
In addition to Marsh, three Catamounts carded rounds of three-under, 69. Senior Matt Cook shot 69 and 71 to finish one stroke back of the ninth-place tie in 14th. Sophomore Ricky Stout concluded his two rounds with his career-best round of 69 to stand tied for 30th at 144, with junior Andres Cuenca (145) tied for 36th and transfer Dustin Furnari tied for 60th after shooting 148.
Rounding out Western's players, Benjy Davey, playing as an individual shot consecutive rounds of 81 on Monday.
