Catamounts Win WCU-Laurel Ridge Intercollegiate

Oct. 2, 2001

Waynesville, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team posted a two-day total of 612 to win the inaugural WCU-Laurel Ridge Intercollegiate by eight strokes Tuesday afternoon at Waynesville's Laurel Ridge Country Club.

The win was the first for Western Carolina since taking top honors at the 1996 VMI Invitational.

The Catamounts were tied for fourth in the 12-team field and off the lead by four strokes before carding a team score of 300 on the final day to win medalist honors. Gardner-Webb, who was tied with Western for fourth after the first round, High Point and South Carolina State each finished with a total of 620 to finish second, third and fourth, respectively. (Ties were broken by using the fifth player's scores on each team, working backwards through their round). Tennessee State (623) rounded out the top five.

High Point's Gordon Hughes carded a two-day score of 148 (four-over par) to take home individual medalist honors. South Carolina State's Chris Goad turned in the low round of the tournament with a two-under 70 on Tuesday, improving his first day total by 11 strokes.

Western had three golfers finish among the top 15. Senior Greg Lewis posted consecutive rounds of 75 for a total of 150 to tie for fifth. Lee Cline and Andrew Paduch tied for 15th after each fired identical rounds of 81-74 for a total of 155. WCU freshman Chase Kress showed a nine-stroke improvement on the second day to finish with a 163 and a 43rd (tied) place finish.

"Our kids played extremely hard today on a golf course that has a tough setup," said head coach Johnny Wike. "I am proud of the way they came back today. This should boost their morale as we progress through the season."

The WCU men's golf team will return to action Oct. 15-16 at the UTC Intercollegiate, held in Chattanooga, Tenn.
