The Western Carolina men's golf team carded a two-day total of 605 (302-303) to place 10th in the 22-team field of the annual Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate, played on the Rees Jones Course in Sunset Beach, N.C., this weekend.
Western Carolina was led by its underclassmen as Matt Dowdy (Jamestown, N.C.) and sophomore Tripp Morrow (Forest City, N.C.) carded rounds of 150 and 151, respectively. Dowdy, playing in his first collegiate event, ended the two days tied for 28th, while Morrow tied for 34th. Juniors Blake Wray (154/48th-t), Chase Kress (155/56th-t) and Keith Tyburski (156/65th-t) rounded out the Catamounts scoring.
On the strength of a 288 on day one, Rutgers won the two-day event with a score of 579. The Scarlet Knights were followed by George Mason (580), Samford (581), Jacksonville (591) and host team Elon (597).
The Western Carolina men's golf team will take next weekend off before returning to action Oct. 7-10 at Winthrop's Mission Inn Intercollegiate, played in Orlando's Mission Inn Resort.
