WCU Men's Golf Wins at Sea Trail; Matt Cook Claims Individual Medalist Honors

Sept. 24, 2006

Sunset Beach, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team rallied from two strokes down to fire a 285 on Sunday to win the 20-team Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate by one stroke over host Elon. Western's two-day score of five under par 571 tied a school record for lowest 36-hole total. The Catamounts were led by Matt Cook (Murphy, N.C.) who birdied the last three holes to shoot 67 and sank a 50-foot eagle putt on the third playoff hole to win individual medalist honors.

For the Catamounts, it was their first team title since the spring of 2005 when winning Appalachian State's Draper Valley Invitational. Also, since Draper Valley, Western has finished among the top 10 in the team standings in 13 consecutive events. Cook's score of 134 over 36 holes, which is 10-under par for two days, established a WCU record, bettering the previous mark set by Blake Wray three years ago by one stroke.

In 19 career events, Cook, whose 67 on both days were a career low for the junior, now has 15 top 10's, 12 top five's and has won six events. He edged Kennesaw State's Kris Shepherd for individual. Shepherd matched Cook's 67 on each day to force the playoff.

For the second consecutive week, transfer Andres Cuenca finished in the top 10. A native of Fuengirola, Spain, Cuenca shot 72-70 to tie for 10th with his 36-hole total of 142 ranking ninth on the WCU all-time list. WCU's lone senior, Tripp Morrow, improved by two strokes to shoot 73 Sunday while his two-day total of four-over par 148 tied him for 32nd. Freshman Benjy Davey carded a 75 on both days to tie for 49th with his six-over 150. Cody Walker rounded out the Cats' scoring with a 151 (72-79) to tie for 59th.

Western Carolina will return to action Oct. 16-17, playing in Liberty's Frank Landrey Invitational.
