Led by a five under 67 by junior Matt Cook, Western Carolina carded a first round score of 286, the seventh-best, 18-hole team score in school history, and stands in second place in the 20-team field and just two shots out of first place at the annual Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate. The final 18 holes of the event will be held Sunday.
Cook, who shares the lead with Kennesaw State's Kris Shepard, turned in his lowest 18-hole score as a Catamount, having fired 68 on three previous occasions. Transfer Andres Cuenca and redshirt freshman Cody Walker each turned in even rounds of 72. Senior Tripp Morrow and freshman Benjy Davey each turned in a three-over round of 75.
James Madison currently leads the event with a day one score of 284.
