Florence, S.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team came up one stroke short of claiming its first team title of the season as the Catamounts shot 296 collectively on Tuesday for a runner-up finish at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,101-yard Country Club of South Carolina. Senior Matt Cook posted his first top five of the season finishing in third place, four strokes in arrears after shooting even par over the two-day event.
Southern Conference-foe Furman, which was 13 strokes off the lead in fifth place after the second round on Monday, rallied with a tournament-low 285 on Tuesday to claim the team championship with a three-round score of 877. The Catamounts were one back at 878 - which is the seventh-best, 54-hole score in school history - followed by first-round leader, East Carolina, and Troy tied for third at 880 and the host Francis Marion rounding out the top five.
First-day leader, Michael McGrady of Troy, claimed the individual medalist honors with a four-under 212 (71-69-72), followed by Furman's Jonathan Bowden three strokes back at 215 (70-75-70). Cook, who tied for the second-most birdies in the tournament (12), finished with a score of 216 (75-68-73) to finish third and lead WCU. His 54-hole score is tied for 17th on WCU's all-time, three-round tourney scoring charts.
Freshman Caleb Marsh shot 75 over the final 18 holes to slip into a tie for sixth-place, the best of his young career. He finished tied for the second-best par 3 scoring average in the tournament, averaging a score of 2.92 on the course's shortest holes. Sophomore Ricky Stout, who was tied for the best par 4 scoring in the 54-hole event at one-under 3.97, finished tied for 11th, also a career-high.
Rounding out Western's scorers were junior Andres Cuenca, who hung tight to finish tied for 25th (224) and sophomore Cody Walker who placed tied for 60th (237). Playing as an individual, junior transfer Dustin Furnari finished tied for 11th with teammate Stout and three others. He was the second-highest finisher among those playing unattached.
Of the five SoCon teams testing out the same course that will be used to decide the conference champion next semester, Western beat out three (Elon, 10th; Appalachian State, T-13th; and Wofford, 15th) in the event.
After back-to-back tournament to open the fall schedule, Western will take next week off before returning to action Oct. 1-2 at the Xavier Invitational in Loveland, Ohio, at the Oasis Golf Club.
