Cullowhee, N.C. - Led by senior Matt Cook and freshman Caleb Marsh deadlocked in a three-way tie for third-place, Western Carolina has four golfers in the top 25 after two rounds of the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate and stands two-strokes behind first day leader, East Carolina. Cook and Marsh each shot 143 through the first two rounds and are just three strokes in arrears with 18 holes left to play at the par 72, 7,101-yard Country of South Carolina.

As a team, Western carded rounds of 295 and 287 to be in the clubhouse at a six-over 582, three strokes behind the ECU Pirates, who also shot 287 in round two but were three strokes better over the opening 18 at 292. Host Francis Marion (585) stands third, three strokes behind WCU, while Troy (587) and Furman (592) round out the top five.

Troy University's Michael McGrady leads the 80-man field entering the final round after carding a four-under, 140 (71-69). Peter McGibney of Francis Marion is second, two strokes back at 142 (68-74), while Cook, Marsh and East Carolina's Tripp Brizendine are tied for third at 143.

After shooting an opening round of 75, Cook bounced back to post the lowest score of the second round, 68, tying the low round of the day (McGibney's 68 in round 1). The Murphy, N.C., native was one of only three golfers to shoot in the 60s on Monday. Marsh, in just his second collegiate event, shot around par in both rounds with a 72 over the first 18 and a one-under, 71, on the latter to stand tied with his teammate.

Sophomore Ricky Stout fired a two-round, three-over par on Monday to stand alone in 18th-place, four strokes behind his teammates and seven back of the leader. Rounding out Western's five entrants were junior Andres Cuenca (t-25th, 149) and sophomore Cody Walker (t-59th, 156) as each WCU golfer shot two-over or better on the second set of 18 holes over the first two rounds. Playing as an individual, junior transfer Dustin Furnari is tied for 11th after carding 75 and 71 for a two-round total of 146.

The Catamounts are not the only Southern Conference team trying to get a leg up on next semester's conference championship, which will be played on the same course. Western leads conference-mates Furman (5th, 592), Elon (t-8th, 604), Wofford (11th, 613) and Appalachian State (t-12th, 615).

The third and final round is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am on Tuesday morning.
