FOLLOW THE NCAA EAST REGIONAL WITH LIVE SCORING FROM GOLFSTAT
Alpharetta, Ga. - Recovering from a double-bogey on his second hole of the day, Western Carolina junior Matt Cook carded an opening round 73 on Thursday to stand tied for 23rd at the NCAA Men's Golf East Regional being played at the Golf Club of Georgia.
Cook, who received an individual bid to the post-season tournament, is scheduled to begin his second round on the first tee at approximately 8:53 am on Tuesday morning.
With a four-under 284 as a team, Georgia Tech leads the event by two strokes over rival, Georgia (286), with Duke in third at even-par, 288, followed by Georgia State (289) and Florida (290) rounding out the top five.
A pair of Yellow Jackets lead the individual scoring as Cameron Tringale shot a five-under, 67, on Thursday with his teammate, Chesson Hadley, carding a four-under 68 to stand second. Maryland's Chris Gold, Duke's Clark Klaasen and Bryan Rozier from Jacksonville State are each tied for third with scores of three-under 69 over the first 18 holes.
The Murphy, N.C., native posted 12 pars on his opening 18 holes. He shot one-over in his opening nine holes on the back before posting back-to-back birdies on the par 4 fourth and fifth to drop to one-under. Cook shot bogey on both the par 3 sixth and par 5 ninth - his final hole of the first round - to finish even on the front and one-over for the day, his best-ever score at an NCAA event and 13 strokes better than his first round from a year ago.
Overall, Cook is just six strokes off the lead with 36 holes to play.
