WCU Men's Golf Finishes 11th at SoCon Championship; Tripp Morrow Places 10th (tied)

Jonesborough, Tenn. - The Western Carolina men's golf team carded a three-day total of 927 to finish 11th at the 2004 Southern Conference Championships, played at The Ridges Golf and Country Club April 18-20. However, Catamount freshman Tripp Morrow fired rounds of 75-74-74 for a three-round total of 223 to tie for 10th individually.

The 223 by Morrow ties him with WCU Hall of Fame inductee Brett Miller as the seventh-lowest score by a Catamount at the SoCon Championships. Also, Morrow becomes just the 11th Catamount to finish among the top 10 at the championships.

Furman turned in the low round of the day (289) to win the title with a total of 880, while Paladin Matt Davidson fired a five-under 67 to claim medalist honors with his three- day score of 212. Rounding out the SoCon leaderboard was Rhys Davies (ETSU) with a 214, Matt Brock (Chattanooga) with a 218, Aron Price (Ga. Southern) and Rob Langley (Furman) with a 219 and four others tying for sixth with a 223 -one stroke better than Morrow's 223.

Western Carolina sophomore Blake Wray was the team's second-highest finisher, placing 37th (tied) with a 231. Junior Chase Kress came in with a 236 (50th-tied), sophomore Keith Tyburski carded a 237 (52nd-tied) with senior Tim Eckberg was 59th-tied with a 248.

Morrow ends the 2002-04 season with a season stroke average of 75.00, which is the third-best season total in school history. Also, through 25 career rounds which is the minimum number to be listed on the WCU all-time list, Morrow's 75.00 career stroke average is currently first. Eckberg ends 2003-04 with a season stroke average of 75.85, 10th-best on the WCU list, while Wray had a season stroke average of 75.88 to rank 11th. Eckberg wrapped up his two-year career at WCU with a stroke average of 76.46, which is currently seventh on the school's all-time list, just behind Kress' three-year stroke average of 76.38 (sixth). Wray currently has a 76.74 career stroke average, which is ninth on the school's all-time list.
