Davidson, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team fired a 297 on the final day of the 2005 Southern Conference Championships, played at River Run Country Club, to place seventh with a 54-hole total of 902. Catamount freshman Matt Cook, who was named second team All-SoCon, carded a one-under par 71 Tuesday to finish the three-day event with a total of 220 to tie for fifth.
Cook, who ranked fourth in the SoCon in scoring average entering the championships with a stroke average of 72.5, becomes Western's first men's golfer to earn All-SoCon honors since 1995 when Jamie Whitley earned the honor by posting a season stroke average of 75.64. Cook also becomes the seventh Catamount to post a top five finish at the SoCon Championships and his 220 is the fifth-best score by a Catamount in the championships.
The 902 carded by the Catamounts marks the third-best total at the SoCon Championships and the 10th-best, 54-hole score in school history.
WCU senior Chase Kress ended his career in fine fashion, posting a two-over 74 on the final day. His three-day total of 223 was good for an 11th-place tie. Sophomore Tripp Morrow carded a 77 Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 225 to place 19th. Junior Blake Wray showed improvement each round, going from an 82 to 77 to 75 for a total of 234 to place 43rd. Freshman Matt Dowdy rounded out the Catamounts' scoring with a total of 240 to tie for 47th.
East Tennessee State carded a 287 on the final day, while the first two rounds leader Davidson turned in a 296 to allow the Buccaneers the chance to earn the come-from-behind victory. ETSU finished with a total of 882. Georgia Southern turned in the low round of the championships (285) to move into second with a total of 885. Davidson finished with an 890.
