WCU's Matt Cook Moves to First at SoCon Men's Golf Championships; Team Falls to Ninth

Hollywood, S.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Matt Cook turned in an even par 72 on Tuesday and his 36-hole score of 142 leads the 48-person field at the 2006 Southern Conference Championships, played at The Links at Stono Ferry. Cook's 142 is Western's second-best, two-round score at the championships and is two strokes better than five other golfers who are currently tied for second with a 36-hole score of 144. As a team, the Catamounts dropped to ninth, shooting 310 on Monday and a carding a two-day total of 607. However, the Catamounts are just three strokes out of seventh and five strokes behind sixth.

Cook was steady over his first nine holes Monday, getting eight pars and one bogey for a one-over 37. On the back nine, he had three bogeys and three birdies over his first six. He finished his day with two pars and a birdie to finish the back nine at one-under 35, giving him an even par 72 for the day.

Tripp Morrow turned in a 79 on Monday, giving him a two-day total of 155 and placing him in a tie for 34th. Matt Flueckiger, who carded a career-low 74 on Sunday, shot 82 today and his 156, 36-hole total ties him for 39th. Keith Tyburski turned in an 81 with his 158 tying him for 43rd and Blake Wray, who fired the second-lowest round on the day of 78 for Western, is in 48th with a 162 total over two days.

Georgia Southern leads the field with 18 holes remaining. The Eagles' 581 is three stokes better than second place College of Charleston.

The third and final round of the 54-hole event will come Tuesday, with the team and individual champions being crowned as well.
