WCU Men's Golf in 5th After Round One at SoCon Championships; Matt Cook One Stroke Off Lead

Hollywood, S.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Matt Cook is one stroke off the lead after firing an opening-round, two-under par score of 70 in the first 18 holes of the three-day 2006 Southern Conference Championships, played at the Links at Stono Ferry. His play, along with a career-low round of 74 by senior Matt Flueckiger, have the Catamounts in fifth place with a nine-over 297. Western is just five strokes behind UNC Greensboro and Georgia Southern, who are tied for third, and six strokes ahead of sixth-place Elon.

Cook, who had no single bogeys in his opening round, did have one double with two birdies and an eagle. Flueckiger suffered a triple bogey on his 17th hole to go from even par to three over. However, he battled back to birdie his 18th for his 74.

Tripp Morrow and Keith Tyburski carded rounds of 76 and 77, respectively, to tie for 26th and 37th. Morrow's round featured 11 pars and two birdies, while Tyburski only had five pars with five birdies. Blake Wray rounded out Western's scoring with an 84.

Round two of the 54-hole event will be start Monday morning with the team and individual champions being crowned after 18 holes Tuesday.
