WCU Moves Up Three Spots To Finish 10th at Belmont

Franklin, Tenn. - Western Carolina fired a six-over, 290 in the third round, moving up three spots to finish 10th (tied) at the Belmont Invitational. The Catamounts finished with a two-day total of 888 in the event, played at The Legends Club, which was the third lowest, three-round total in WCU history.

Western was led by senior Tim Eckberg, who carded rounds of 75-71-73 for a total of 219 and placed 19th. The 219 is the eighth-lowest, 54-hole total by a Catamount. On Tuesday, freshman Tripp Morrow overcame consecutive rounds of 79 to fire an even par 71 in round three. Sophomore Blake Wray carded a one-over 72. Overall, Morrow finished 71st (tied) with a 229, while Wray shot 225 and placed 53rd (tied). Junior Chase Kress was consistent over the three rounds with scores of 73-74-74 for a two-day total of 221 and place 21st (tied). Rounding out the Catamount scoring was Keith Tyburski. The sophomore placed 61st (tied) and finished with a three-round score of 227 (76-76-75).

Tennessee State had three golfers shoot under par and came from behind to win the event with a total of 851, defeating day one leader Wofford by eight strokes. Tennessee State's Robert Dinwiddie claimed individual medalist honors with a five-under par 208.

Western Carolina will wrap up the 2003-04 regular season April 16-18 at the 2004 Southern Conference Championships, played in Johnson City, Tenn., at The Ridges.
