Spartanburg, S.C. - Opening day individual leader, Western Carolina sophomore Andres Cuenca, claimed his first-ever collegiate individual tournament championship on Tuesday, firing an even-par 72 in the final round to win by two strokes. With the individual champion and two golfers in the top 10, the Catamounts finished tied for fifth.

Elon, which also led after the first two rounds, claimed the team championship with a seven-under 857 to win by 10 strokes over second-place Charleston Southern (867). Jacksonville (868) edged the host Wofford Terriers (869) for third, with the Catamounts rounding out the top five with a team 873, the fifth-lowest, three-round score in school history.

Cuenca, making his return after missing last week's Furman Intercollegiate, shot a three-round 208 which ties for the second-lowest, 54-hole in WCU school history to claim individual medalist honors. The sophomore posted an eight-under par, 70-66-72--208, which tied for the seventh-lowest tally in tournament history. His final score is the lowest for an individual since Virginia's Steve Marino registered a nine-under par 207 to win the 2002 championship.

Junior Matt Cook shot even par on Tuesday for a three-round 213 to finish tied for seventh for his sixth top 10 finish of this season. Both Cuenca and Cook each finished with a dozen birdies apiece.

Rounding out Western's finishers were freshmen Ricky Stout (T-48th, 227), senior Tripp Morrow (T-58th, 228) and freshman Patrick Lamb, who shot even par on the par 3 holes, finishing tied for 63rd (231). Playing as an individual, freshman Cody Walker finished 21st after shooting three-consecutive rounds of one-over, 73, for his career-best, 54-hole score of 219.

Western Carolina returns to action on April 22-24 in the 2007 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships to be held at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
