Greenville, S.C. -
Western Carolina sophomore Matt Cook fired a two-under par 70 in the final round of the Furman Intercollegiate to place second for his ninth career top five finish in 14 all-time events. His play led the Catamounts to tie for ninth in a highly competitive 16-team field. Western has recorded a top 10 finish in all eight of its events in 2005-06.
Cook, who carded a 54-hole score of 212, was six strokes behind medalist Blaine Pefflex of Maryland (70-69-67=206) and four strokes ahead of third-place finisher Neil O'Briain of Wofford. In addition, Cook's 212 ranks as his fourth-lowest, three-round score and the seventh-lowest, three-round score in school history. The Murphy product led the field on the par 3's, averaging one-under over three days. He was also eight-under on the par 5's, which tied for third. Over 54 holes, Cook recorded 34 pars and 11 birdies.
Tripp Morrow was Western's second-leading scorer in the event, shooting a 228 over three rounds and tying for 48. Blake Wray and Matt Flueckiger each carded a 235 to tie for 76th, while Brian Hogan was 93rd with his 243.
Western, who was one shot out of eighth, tied for ninth with four other schools. Its 907 ranks as the 19th-lowest, 54-hole team score in school history.
In addition to claiming individual medalist honors, Maryland won the team competition as well with a score of 867, 12 strokes better than second-place Chattanooga. Samford, Wofford and host-team Furman rounded out the top five.
The Catamounts will play its final regular-season event of the season April 3-4 at the Wofford Invitational, played at Spartanburg's Carolina Country Club.
