Cook Slips into Tie for 12th; Western Moves Up One Spot at Furman Intercollegiate

Greenville, S.C. - All five of Western Carolina's golfers shot in the mid-70s on Saturday as the Catamounts carded a team 298 to advance one spot as a team into 18th at the 38th-annual Furman Intercollegiate at the 6,825-yard Furman University Golf Club. Catamount junior Matt Cook shot a three-over 75 to slip into a tie for 12th to lead WCU.

East Carolina grabbed the team lead with a five-over 293 on Saturday for a two-round total of 581, leading second-place Virginia Tech (583) by two strokes after the Hokies shot a two-under 286. Western Carolina has posted rounds of 304 and 298 thus far in the tournament.

Ben Spitz (71-70=141) of Rhode Island and Ryan Sypniewski (69-72=141) of Virginia Tech moved into a three-way tie for first with first round tri-leader Stuart Carrihill (68-73=141) of Charleston Southern. Seven other golfers enter the final round within two strokes of the individual lead.

Again playing without second-leading scorer, Andres Cuenca, Western freshman Patrick Lamb led the Catamounts with a one-over 73 on Saturday, with his classmate Ricky Stout firing 74 in round two. Senior Tripp Morrow shaved 11 strokes off his first round score to shoot 76, with freshman Michael Chapin also improving on the second 18-holes by firing 77.

The 54-hole tournament concludes Sunday with final round action beginning at 8:00 am.
