Greenville, S.C. -
Western Carolina senior Lee Cline was carded a six-over par 222 to led the Catamounts to a 15th-place finish in the 24-team Furman Intercollegiate this weekend.
This weekend was a key stop on WCU's spring schedule for two reasons. First, the field featured some of the area's top programs. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the event was played at the Furman University Golf Course, which is the site of the 2002 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships in four weeks (April 19-21).
Virginia tech won the three-day event, posting a four-over 868. Host team Furman tied with Coastal Carolina for second, each firing 872. Virginia Tech also took top individual honors as Brenden De Jorge had rounds of 71-69-71 for a total of 211, which was five under par.
In addition to Cline, Western was paced by a pair of freshmen. Chase Kress tied for 48th with a total of 227 (75-76-76), while Andrew Paduch was one stroke off Kress' pace finishing tied for 52nd (74-78-76=228). Greg Lewis and Clay Kilgore each tied for 93rd with a three-round total of 236.
The Catamounts will return to action April 8-9 to play in the Belmont Invitational. The 36-hole event will be played at The Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
