WCU Men's Golf Rallies to Finish Sixth at El Diablo

Citrus Springs, Fla. - Western Carolina, who stood in 16th place after round one in the 19-team El Diablo Intercollegiate rallied to finish sixth (tied) thanks to two top 10 individual finishes by the Catamounts. Matt Cook, who finished the 54 holes at three-over par, placed fourth (tied), while Tripp Morrow, who shot 82 in the opening round, rebounded with rounds of 69 and 72 to finish ninth.

Morrow, who records his sixth career top 10 finish and first of the season, shot 141 over the final two rounds, which ranks as his third-lowest two-round total of his career. The Forest City native wound up leading the 116-person field with 40 pars over 54 holes.

Cook, who recorded his fourth top five finish in this his seventh event of the season and his 10th career top 10 in 12 all-time events, turned in the 16th lowest 54-hole total in school history and his 219 was his fourth-best, three-round score ever. The sophomore from Murphy was eight under par for the par fives for the tournament and ranks third in the field with his 12 birdies.

Rounding out Western's scoring was Blake Wray, who finished 65th (tied) with his 239, followed by Matt Flueckiger (84th; 242) and Keith Tyburski (112th; 264).

Jacksonville won the event going away as its 885 was 20 strokes better than second place Charleston Southern (905). Winthrop, Northern Illinois and Oklahoma City rounded out the top five.

Western Carolina will return to action Mar. 24-26 at the Furman Invitational.
