Western Carolina fired rounds of 315 and 301 for a 36-hole total of 616 to place sixth in the 19-team field at the Winthrop Invitational at Waterford Golf Course, Mar. 4-5.
The event was the first for the WCU men's golf team for the 2002 Spring season. Host school Winthrop carded a two-day score of 585, after a 285 on the second day, to win the event.
Clay Kilgore led Western, finishing tied for fifth with a score of 74-72=146, while senior Greg Lewis placed 24th (tied) with a two-day total of 153.
Western Carolina will return to action Mar. 11-12 at The Citadel Invitational, held at Pine Forest Country Club. The Catamounts are coming off a successful Fall campaign. This team has four of the top 15 single-season scores in school history to date. Lewis leads the way with season scoring average of 73.82. That total is currently the best season scoring average in school history.
