Led by freshman Michael Chapin, the Western Carolina men's golf team stands in fifth-place after the first of three rounds at the University of West Florida Argonaut Invitational at the Par 72, 6,815-yard Pensacola Country Club. The Catamounts carded an opening round 294 to trail first round leader, Virginia Commonwealth (289), by five strokes.
Chapin shot an even-par 72, including a one-under 35 on the back nine, to lead the Catamounts, currently standing in a nine-way tie for ninth-place. Junior Matt Cook is one stroke in arrears with a 73 over the first 18 holes with sophomore transfer, Andres Cuenca, one back with a 74.
Rounding out Western's scorers were freshman Ricky Stout (t-35th, 75) and Tripp Morrow (46th, 76). Cuenca and Stout both ranked tied for second in par 3 scoring on the afternoon, one-under through the first round (2.88).
Winthrop's Kelly Manders and Matt Watson of Old Dominion both fired a four-under opening round 68 to stand atop the leader board. Virginia Commonwealth (289) leads ODU (290) by one stroke, with Eastern Kentucky and Winthrop tied for third two strokes back (291) and WCU five off the pace at 294.
Second round play began on Monday evening and will conclude on Tuesday morning with the third and final round to follow.
