North Charleston, S.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team opened its 2005 spring schedule by placing 10th out of 17 teams at the Charleston Southern Kickoff this past Monday and Tuesday at Coosaw Creek Country Club.
Sophomore Tripp Morrow (Forest City, N.C.) and freshman Matt Cook of Murphy, N.C., who joined the team this past January, ;led the way for the Catamounts, each carding a three-round total of 226 to tie for 28th. Senior Chase Kress tied for 38th with a 54-hole score of 230, followed by junior Blake Wray's 231 to tie for 42nd. Brian Hogan rounded out the Catamount quintet with a total of 245 to tie for 81st. Junior Matt Flueckiger also made the trip, playing as an individual, firing rounds of 80-73-81 for a total of 234 to tie for 55th.
Host team Charleston Southern won the Classic with a 54-hole total of 865, followed by Campbell (888), Florida Atlantic (891) and Kennesaw State (899). Campbell's Fredrik Sundberg took home individual medalist honors with a six-under 207 (70-68-69).
The Catamounts will return to action Mar. 5-6 at the Tusculum Intercollegiate in Greeneville, Tenn., at Link Hills Country Club.
