Cullowhee, N.C. -
The Western Carolina Department of Athletics announced its 11-game football schedule for the 2006 season today, which includes five home games and concluding the regular season in "The Swamp" at the University of Florida. While Western will play four of its first six games at home, the Cats will conclude the regular season by playing four of their last five on the road.
"The 2006 schedule will provide a great deal of excitement for our team and our fans," said WCU athletics director Chip Smith. "It will be a challenging season that will also allow us to be successful."
The Catamounts will open the season on a Thursday night, hosting the Chowan Braves out of Murfreesboro, N.C., on August 31. After an open date the following week, Western will return to Whitmire Stadium/Waters Field on Sept. 16 to host Eastern Kentucky, who is annually a top 25 contender in the NCAA I-AA ranks. The Colonels posted a 7-4 record this past year, including a 7-1 scoresheet in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Western will play its first road game of the year on Sept. 23, which will also be its Southern Conference opener, traveling to Greenville, S.C., to play NCAA I-AA semifinalist Furman. The Cats will stay in the league for the next five games, hosting Georgia Southern (Sept. 30), playing at Elon (Oct. 7), hosting Chattanooga for Homecoming (Oct. 14), playing at The Citadel (Oct. 21) and playing at Wofford (Oct. 28).
Two of Western's last three games will be non-conference games. First, the Catamounts will play their third consecutive road game at Liberty on Nov. 4. Western's lone home game down the stretch will be hosting rival and 2005 NCAA I-AA champions Appalachian State in the Battle for the Old Mountain Jug on Nov. 11. The Cats final game of the regular season will be a trip to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field, better known as "The Swamp," to face the Florida Gators on Nov. 18.
